Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite 4.1

I bought the Prowler Elite 4.1 as a change from my Perception Freedom, it is basically a slightly longer  Prowler 13 with a few additions/changes. I got it from Cornwall Canoes.

The main draw for me was the two moulded and rigid side carry handles which replaced the webbing handles on the Prowler 13, these make lifting the kayak onto roof bars very easy.

There are now two forward facing flush mount rod holder as well as the rear ones, I rarely use these due to most of my fishing being on the drift, however they may lend themselves to other styles of fishing.

The front hatch has an elasticated neoprene cover which stretches over and secures around the raised lip prior to placing the plastic hatch cover on. This creates a watertight seal with no ingress, however it is difficult to fit in place and it’s handy to have someone to help with this. The area inside is quite spacious and takes a dismantled C-Tug with ease. The newer Ultra 4.1 has a locking hatch like the Ultra 4.3 and 4.7.

There is a six inch centre  screw  hatch with a storage bucket underneath, small items such as car keys, phone and camera are stored in there in dry bags, this isn’t watertight and if there has been any waves over the cockpit I find the water has managed to get inside.

One thing I noticed was that the hull wall thickness seemed thinner than the Perception, the Elite seems to ‘flex’ slightly when the hull leaves the water and slaps back down when pushing through waves/chop. I think this does slow paddling speed compared to the more rigid hull of the freedom.

The Elite is moulded with a transducer ready scupper hole which made fitting the fish finder very easy, there is also a pre drilled hole for the power cable, there is a solid grommet in this upon purchase. All you need to do is replace the grommet with a one with the correct size hole for the power cable. These are good design points along with the numerous moulded in threaded brass inserts for adding accessories.

On top of the transducer scupper there six others, two in the footwell, two in the tank well and two in the seating area these are a smaller diameter and longer than the others creating a dry ride.

The tankwell is very spacious and there is a space behind the seat that takes a flambeau waterproof box.

The Kayak is supplied with a plano waterproof tackle box which is secured to the deck in front of the moulded in drinks bottle holder by bungee cord. I removed this and used a piece of UPVC secured using the three threaded inserts, to this I mounted the fish finder head and also my GPS. There is enough room to the rear of this to use as a small cutting/baiting board.

I decided on the Camo colour scheme as I intended to fish freshwater lakes/rivers as well as the sea and thought it would blend in well.

The Prowler Elite 4.1 paddles nicely and is stable  enough to fish from ‘side saddle’ if you prefer this way, it is maneuverable and tracks well and, due to the side carry handles car topping is easy. It handles surf well either launching or landing.

A good all-round fishing kayak from a well known manufacturer
